One of our favorite ways to spend time together as the ELITE Real Estate team is getting out on the water. Whether we're cruising around Medano Bay, passing Land's End (El Arco), exploring the Pacific coastline, or anchoring in the crystal-clear waters of Santa Maria and Chileno Bay, every trip offers something different.
This time, we hit the jackpot! Within minutes of leaving the marina, we found ourselves surrounded by hundreds of mobula rays launching themselves several feet into the air in every direction. For nearly an hour, we watched these graceful creatures soar above the water, splash back into the sea, and repeat the performance over and over again. It was one of those unforgettable moments that reminds us why we love living in Los Cabos.
What Are Mobula Rays?
Mobula rays are often mistaken for manta rays, but they're actually a smaller species known for their spectacular aerial acrobatics. They can leap several feet above the water, sometimes performing flips before splashing back into the Sea of Cortez.
Scientists are still studying exactly why mobula rays jump. Some believe it's a way to communicate with one another, remove parasites, attract mates, or simply travel more efficiently. Whatever the reason, seeing hundreds of them jumping at once is one of the most unique wildlife experiences in Baja California Sur.
When Is Mobula Ray Season in Los Cabos?
The best time to see mobula rays in Los Cabos is typically from May through July, when warmer ocean temperatures bring large schools closer to shore. During mobula ray season, it's common for boat captains to encounter groups ranging from dozens to hundreds of rays around Medano Bay and other areas along the Sea of Cortez or Pacific.
No two days are ever the same. Some outings may include just a few sightings, while others turn into an unforgettable show with rays jumping in every direction.
